Atlanta Recreation & Sports
Published On: Oct 06, 2006

Throughout the year in Atlanta there's the opportunity to stay active and physically fit with a number of sports include golfing, running, biking, rollerblading, tennis and more. In addition to the sports and recreation info below, the Atlanta Sports & Fitness magazine, which you can usually pick up for free at any health club, is a valuable resource.

Golf
Atlanta's biggest sport boasts a variety of golf courses. If you're looking to stay close to the downtown area and merely "putt around," the Bobby Jones Golf Course offers an 18-hole public course which has slightly rugged greens and a somewhat rough physique, yet don't let that deter you from a visit. The spectacular view of the skyline, lax tone, close proximity to the city and easily manageable price provide its charm.

If you're seeking a freshly-manicured creme-de-la-golf-course in Atlanta, you may want to try North Fulton Golf Course in Chastain Park. This 18-hole course has mostly short pars, yet the diverse terrain and hazards will certainly offer a challenge for the average player. The 18th hole is especially challenging with its 446 yard stretch that bends around to the left with a mini-mountainous rise to the green.

Chattahoochee National Recreation Area
Explore nature's scenic marvels at the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Go for an invigorating run through the Cochran Fitness Trail and amplify your aerobic capacity. Hop on your mountain bike and pedal through Sope Creek Trail. Head to the river and canoe, kayak or raft through the waters. Or, if you'd merely like to relax and enjoy the outdoors, pack a picnic or rent a canoe and cast out a fishing line.

Tennis
If you're really into your game, the Bitsy Grant Tennis Center has some of the best courts in Atlanta. Play French Open style on one of 13 choice clay courts, or standard US Open style on one of ten hard courts. Most of these courts also offer night play. If you're looking for a more leisurely place to play, then Piedmont Park is a great choice.

Piedmont Park
Also within the park there's a baseball diamond, a pathway for jogging or rollerblading, a wide-open grassy null, a couple of soccer fields and picturesque views of Atlanta's architectural delights.
